Biden Signs Executive Order To Protect Abortion Access

President Joe Biden has signed an executive order to preserve abortion access. Biden’s executive order, signed on Friday, comes shortly after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade to eliminate the constitutional right to an abortion.

“I’m asking the Justice Department that, much like they did in the Civil Rights era, to do everything in their power to protect these women seeking to invoke their rights,” Biden said at the White House, according to NPR.

Aiming to ensure the safety of abortion patients and providers, the Biden administration has vowed to set up mobile clinics near the borders of states restricting abortion access. The executive order is also calling for private, pro bono lawyers who will offer support to people crossing state lines to get an abortion.

Additionally, Biden is directing the secretary of Health and Human Services to issue a report in the next 30 days. The report will outline additional actions to protect medication abortion and expand access to emergency contraception and IUDs, as well as increase public education around reproductive rights. Biden’s order will also create a new task force on reproductive health care.

Although the president can’t restore the nationwide right to an abortion, he is urging Americans to elect more members of Congress in November’s midterm elections who will support federal legislation to protect reproductive rights.

“President Biden has made clear that the only way to secure a woman’s right to choose is for Congress to restore the protections of Roe as federal law. Until then, he has committed to doing everything in his power to defend reproductive rights and protect access to safe and legal abortion,” the White House said in a statement, according to CNN.

Abortion is banned in at least nine states so far. That includes Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
