Texas Family Raises More Than $2 Million After Facing Series of Tragedies Following Mass Shooting

The family of Joe Garcia, a Texas man who died a few days after losing his wife in a school shooting, has raised more than $2 million to cover various expenses in the wake of the series of tragedies. Joe’s wife, Irma Garcia, is one of two teachers who was killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas when a gunman opened fire on Tuesday.

“She would literally do anything for anybody……no questions asked,” Irma’s cousin, Debra Austin, wrote on a GoFundMe page for the family. “She loved her classroom kids and died trying to protect them.”

Joe died two days after losing his wife. The family said he died “as a result of a medical emergency.”

“I truly believe Joe died of a broken heart and losing the love of his life of more than 25 years was too much to bear,” Austin wrote.

Irma, who was a fourth-grade teacher, expressed her love for her family when she wrote in her biography on the school’s website. The beloved teacher said she has four children with her husband.

“I love to BBQ with my husband, listen to music, and take country cruises to Concan,” she wrote. “I have my eldest Cristian son completing Marine boot camp and another son Jose attending Texas State university University. My eldest daughter Lyliana will be a sophomore in high school and my youngest Alysandra will be a 7th grader this year.”

Jordan McMorrough, a spokesperson for the Archdiocese of San Antonio, raved about Joe and Irma’s impact on the community.

“Joe and Irma Garcia were parishioners of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Uvalde, and Irma was a leader in a woman’s ministry there,” McMorrough told CNN.

In a separate GoFundMe page, Irma’s nephew described the couple as “high school sweethearts.”

“Such a tragic story of two high school sweethearts. who were both loved by many,” John Martinez wrote.

Nineteen children and Garcia’s co-teacher, Eva Mireles, also died in the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School.
