Chet Hanks Sits Down With Ziwe, Defends Himself Against Cultural Appropriation Accusations

Chet Hanks, the actor who has been criticized for cultural appropriation and other controversial comments, refused to show any remorse when he sat down for an interview with Ziwe Fumudoh on Showtime. The late-night talk show host gave a sneak peek of the upcoming interview when she posted a clip of the segment on social media.

“I asked Chet Hanks if he wanted to apologize to any marginalized communities,” Ziwe said on Twitter.

The interviewer specifically asked the actor to address the backlash he faced after repeatedly imitating a Patois accent, a dialect primarily spoken in Jamaica.

“Are there any marginalized communities you want to apologize to? I don’t know, maybe the Patois community?” Ziwe said.

Hanks, however, firmly defended himself against accusations of cultural approproation.

“Nah. I don’t feel like I’ve truly done anything offensive, so I don’t,” he said.

Ziwe continued to press the issue with a hint of sarcasm.

“You don’t see it as cultural appropriation,” she said. “You see it as like a celebration of culture. And then it’s like social justice warriors can go kick rocks”

Still, Hanks stood his ground.

“”No, I 100% agree,” he said. “Social justice warriors can kick rocks.”

According to ET Online, Hanks appeared on Ziwe’s show to promote his new private training app. The actor, who now brands himself as a fitness guru, initially planned to appear on the Instagram Live series Baited With Ziwe. However, he was given a chance to appear on Ziwe’s talk show on Showtime when another guest dropped out.

“He randomly texted me, like, congratulating me on my work and then I asked him, like, ‘Oh hey, do you wanna do the show?’” the talk show host said.

Ziwe said she had planned to have Hanks on the show for a long time.

“I was so delighted. He had been someone who I thought would be an iconic guest for years and I think that interview was an iconic interview,” she told ET Online.
