For The 15th Straight Year, Spelman College Holds The Crown As The Top HBCU In The Nation

The U.S. News & World Report released the 37th edition of its annual college rankings, and topping the list of the nation’s top historically Black colleges and universities is none other than the Atlanta-based, all-women school, Spelman College.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Spelman holds the crown for the 15th year in a row.  Fellow Georgia HBCU, Morehouse College, joins Spelman in the top 10, tied for fourth with Hampton University.

To make U.S. News & World Report’s HBCU list, a school must be an undergraduate baccalaureate-granting institution that enrolls primarily first-year, first-time students must currently be listed as part of the White House and U.S. Department of Education’s Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and must have made it on U.S. News & World Report’s overall ranking for best colleges.

Spelman, the oldest historically black college for women in the country, was founded in 1881. Though the school has over 60 organizations for students to choose from, they do not participate in intercollegiate sports competitions. However, Spelman offers all students a wellness program instead. Spelman is also one-of-a-kind in that its student-to-faculty ratio is 11:1, ensuring that every student feels seen on campus. The college also boasts a 4-year graduation rate of 65%.

The esteemed women’s HBCU has proven to be a strong training ground for students to excel and after 15 years topping the list of HBCUs, they don’t look to be slowing down any time soon.

The other nine schools trailing behind Spelman on the list, respectively, are: Howard University, Xavier University of Louisiana, Morehouse College, Atlanta (which was tied Tuskegee University), Florida A&M University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Fisk University, Claflin University (which was tied with Delaware State University).

Round of applause for all of this Black collegiate excellence!
